White-eyed parakeetBirds in Suriname

white-eyed parakeet

Photo of a pair of white-eyed parakeets made by N. Takano (personal museum of natural history, his copyright as with all the other photographers) near the Voltzberg in the Central Suriname Nature Reserve (CNRS) in Suriname in August 2004. In flight the white-eyed parakeet resembles the red-shouldered macaw, but in this photo you can see the yellow on the underwing just bordering the red on the wrist. Most of the time you can see the conspicious white around the eyes, but there are more parrots with white around the eyes (see the much heavier Mealy Amazon with its shorter tail for instance) and macaws have a lot of white just up to the bill. As most parrots these white-eyes eat fruit and seeds. Below are two photos made by Camille and Suzanne Essed in their garden in Lelydorp in Suriname. In August the birds were seeking a place to make a nest there (and made a hole in a roof). The last one is made by R. Ribot at the same location.
