Photo of a pair of Red-shouldered macaws, made by Carl Beel near Hannover savanna in Suriname in September 2008. This small macaw is mainly seen in the savannas near mauritia palm stands or at the border of the savanna forest. The best place to see them is around Zanderij, where sometimes flocks of up to 150 birds are seen (Foek Chin Joe), but mostly a couple of pairs. They eat large fruits as all macaws, for instance of palms. The photo probably shows young birds without blue in their crown and with a bill not yet totally grey, and the red on the wing not totally developped.
Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
