Boat-billed heron, Savacou huppé, Pato cuchara, Arapapá, Crapaud quack

The two photos above were made by KD dijkstra and Eric Thomassen in the Kaburi reserve in the west of Suriname in October 2007 and below are two photos by J.H. Ribot, Emmen zoo,1997. This heron is especially active at night (as in the second picture). On rainy days you can see them fishing or hunting small animals (crabs, frogs), not only in the marshes in the coastal region but also along creeks farther from the coast, like near Zanderij airport. They can make a sound by snapping with their bill and at night they sometimes give their presence away with their call.
