Rock pigeon (feral), Rock doveBirds in Suriname

feral rock pigeon, Paramaribo

Photo of a very dark rock pigeon made by Jan Hein Ribot in Paramaribo in 2006. These free flying birds are the descendants of escaped pigeons that were raised by people in town. They are probably still being fed by people, so not really wild. Already before I lived there in the seventies, a group was freely circling around in the centre of Paramaribo. You can see them nowadays in places in Suriname like Brownsweg or Lelydorp, looking for seeds. Colors can be very different for different birds in the same group, above is a picture of a very dark, grey bird. As most people don't report them, I have no idea where they can all be found in Suriname. Below a photo taken in the Gravenstraat by Leo Olmtak, where you can see diferently colored pigeons.
