Variegated Flycatcher Tyran tacheté, Peitica, Atrapamoscas Veteado, Empidonomus varius

Photo of a Variegated Flycatcher, made by Erik Toorman at Zandery Airport in June 2007. This flycatcher has rufous in its tail and stripes on its back, that distinguish it from the much more common Piratic Flycatcher. It is often seen in the savanna near the airport, where it also nests. There are also visitors from the south of South America (Southern Brazil and Northern Argentina) that stay in the mangroves and gardens of the coastal area (sometimes in groups) hunting for insects. They come here in the southern winter.

Varigated flycatcher, monthly distribution

Days with a report about a Variegated Flycatcher, summed over some years. The peak for July comes for 2/3 from birds in the coastal area (probably the migrantion peak), for December to February only 2 out of 18 come from this region.

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
