House sparrowBirds in Suriname

younf house sparrow in Nickerie, Suriname, pardal, moineau domestique

Photo of a young house sparrow, made in Nieuw Nickerie in March 2004 by Louise van Romondt-Vonk. More birds were seen by Dick A. Jonkers and they have already been breeding there in the West of Suriname. This photo is the first time a house sparrow is reported from Suriname. Where they come from is unknown, they seem to be brought in by someone as a group in 2002 in Nickerie. Nowadays they are also seen in Paramaribo. They originate in Europe, western Asia and Africa, but can now be seen worldwide, in Australia, North America but also in many places in South America. Already around 1900 hundreds of them were introduced into Brazil and they also breed in the neighbouring countries.

Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
