Pictures of the glossy turquoise eggs of a Great Tinamou and a baby chick. The photos were made by Tony Henneberg in the village of Pusugrunu on the Saramacca river in January 2006. The eggs were taken care off and hatched soon after they were found in the forest. As tinamous stay on the bottom deep in the forest they are seldomly seen and even less so photographed; I know them only from the sounds they make, especially in the rainy season. These are the only pictures of tinamous that I have from Suriname. Great Tinamous lay 3 to 7 eggs on the ground, often between the buttresses of a tree, mostly from January to May. This is a sound of the Great Tinamou, taped by Alexandre Renaudier in Mana, just across the border in French Guiana.
Each small square indicates the observation of at least one (group) of these birds, the medium ones at least 4 observations on different days and the largest ones 10 or more. The color of each square indicates: blue for coastal area, yellow for savanna and red for rainforest.
